Hypnosis - What It Is And What It Is Not
Myths have always chased hypnosis and its therapeutic arm, hypnotherapy. Some consider them to be black magic whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Following are some of the well known misconceptions about hypnosis and the reality behind them.
Hypnosis has nothing to do with black magic of any kind. Psychology and the other sciences have an important role to play in the hypnotic method, and it is very easy to acquire and practice. People refuse to acknowledge hypnosis even after watching participants effectively undergoing it in public sessions. They believe that the subjects who have been under hypnosis are mentally not powerful enough to withstand the impact of the practitioner. But nothing could be more distant from the truth. Hypnosis can be done on anyone regardless of his or her mental strength.
Another belief is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which again is a serious misconception. An individual under hypnosis does not get segregated from the outside world, but stays completely aware of the happenings around him. Hypnosis actually brings forth a state of complete relaxation characterized by a growth in levels of attentiveness, and this heightened awareness helps the subject to receive new inputs without difficulty.
Another misconception, which has been circulated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can be applied on merely 5% of the human population. The researchers are somewhat true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis technique without acknowledging individual differences in character and disposition. People differ in their natures and personalities, and thus there have to be different hypnosis techniques to suit the temperaments of different people.
Meditation and hypnosis are usually thought to be the same by people. However, communication between the subject and the practitioner is paramount in hypnosis, while meditation is like a communion with the self without any external interaction involved. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Trance is again a state of mind devoid of any communication, on the other hand communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis technique.
A majority of people believe that it is impossible to bring about alterations in one’s appearance and behaviour through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is unnatural to the body. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by altering behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.
If a person falls for all the wrong notions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a better and healthier life.
